Kaizer Chiefs still chasing PSL tilte

KAIZER Chiefs nearly courted disaster in their battle for Absa Premiership honours before they turned on a Kaizer Motaung Jnr-inspired virtuoso performance to edge Platinum Stars 3-2 in a thrilling match here yesterday.

Motaung first cancelled out Thuso Phala's second-minute opener when he headed in the equaliser during a sustained period of Amakhosi dominance. Siphiwe Tshabalala crossed expertly for Motaung to head past Tapuwa Kapini in the 27th minute.

Never in awe of their illustrious opponents, Stars recovered from the setback to regain their grip on the match with Phala's second. He got on the end of Mduduzi Nyanda's great 34th-minute layoff. The goal came against the run of play.

But Chiefs recovered again as enterprising fulcrum Reneilwe Letsholonyane saw off the challenge of two defenders and Bafana Bafana teammate Siphiwe Tshabalala applied the silky finishing touch on the hour mark.

Sensing a draw, Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic egged his troops forward into the heart of the battle for a precious three points, and to his delight Amakhosi got their winner through Motaung Jnr in the 65th minute.

Part of the credit, however, must go to second-half substitute Sthembiso Ncgobo, who headed into Motaung's path for the marksman to seal an inspiring win.

It was always going to be a tough ask of Stars to derail Amakhosi's championship ambitions, not least with rivals Orlando Pirates having stretched their lead at the top with a win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

But Stars coach Owen da Gama could take heart from his side's display, which so nearly saw Stars pull off one of the famous victories of the season. In the end though, it proved a near-slip for Chiefs who remain favourites to lift the league championship.
