IVORY COAST STRIKER Didier Drogba has stepped away from international football.The 36 year-old took to social media to make the announcement, admitting he came to the decision ‘with much sadness’.
A stellar career with his country saw him score 65 goals in 104 appearances while he propelled the team to three World Cup tournaments.
But despite being part of a ‘golden generation’, Drogba was never crowned an African champion with the Ivory Coast suffering penalty heartbreak in two separate finals. In the 2006 Cup of Nations decider, Egypt won 4-2 in a shootout while in the 2012 final, Zambia caused a huge upset by winning 8-7 on penalties.
This summer, Drogba rejoined Chelsea on a one-year deal having spent eight years there between 2004 and 2012.
