Ghana beats Democratic Republic of Congo in Group C

SINCE the organisers of the African Nations Championship failed to excite fans about the tournament, much depends on the football on the pitch to entice crowds to the stadiums.

But Ghana's 1-0 win over Congo at the Free State Stadium on Monday failed totally in this respect.

Ghana Vs Congo

It was as if organisers in Bloemfontein were told the night before yesterday's match that they would be hosting tournament games, such was the level of preparation.

Luckily for the city's local organising committee, they didn't have too many spectators to contend with.

The footballers followed a similar pattern: the shooting was skyward, the passing scattered and the defending schoolboy.

The first-half winner by winger Theophilus Anobaah was as freaky a goal as you'll ever see.

And if Ghana continue to play the way they did yesterday they are not likely to wipe away the memory of the Africa Cup of Nations failure here last year with victory this time around.

Congo started the game with more bite than their more fancied opponents expected.

Obassi Ngatsongo, the No 9, was put through on goal in the fourth minute by his strike partner Bhebey Ndey but his long-range shot hit theadvertising boarding.

After a couple of missed chances, Anobaah scored one of the most fortuitous goals you will ever see in the 34th minute which proved the difference between the two sides.

The left winger was in the Congo box trying to turn defender Andzouana Andzouana. The ball ricocheted between both players before looping over goalkeeper Mouyaki for the opener.

Congo should have been level six minutes later but midfielder Lorry Nkolo and defender Ngouga missed seemingly unmissable chances from point-blank range.

Libya beat Ethiopia 2-0 in their opening match, with Abu Shnaf opening the score after just four minutes at the Free State Stadium

Substitute Omar sealed the result in the 83rd minute.

Libya have taken the top spot in Group C.
