Last month, after Bafana Bafana beat world champions Spain in their prestige friendly at Soccer City, coach Gordon Igesund said he expected to hear within a week about which players he would be able to pick for the tournament from January 11 to February 1
The frustration of the Bafana Bafana coach was all too evident after reporters quizzed him over just what side he would be able to turn out.
But he said he expected to know after a meeting within seven days.
But that time period has now past and there is still no clarity on whether Igesund can pick the best South African players in the Premier Soccer League.
Chimhavi’s assurances contrast with the PSL approach, as espoused by its chief executive officer Braam de Villiers last month, that any decision to release players to compete in CHAN must be made by the individual clubs.
The tournament is for quasi-national teams, made up of home-based players only, and in theory South Africa could field a powerful side and start among the favourites.
But because the tournament is not officially sanctioned by FIFA, clubs are under no obligation to release players.
As the league will resume after its Christmas and New Year break on January 23, few, if any PSL and National First Division clubs, will be wiling to let players go and join Igesund’s squad.
“We cannot dictate to them,” de Villiers said, adding the league had responsibilities to its broadcast partners and sponsors and could not summarily move its fixtures.
It is a dire indictment on the standard of leadership in South African football that this issue is still to be decided more than two years after South Africa agreed to host the 16-team tournament.
