Polokwane City struck Tuks three times in PSL match

POLOKWANE — Top-flight rookies Polokwane City struck three times in the first half, romping to a 3-0 win over University of Pretoria at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday as they drew clear of the Premiership relegation zone.

The hosts capitalised on a poor defensive display from the visitors in the opening period.

Puleng Tlolane put City in front in the seventh minute, climbing high to net a header after a cross from Moffat Mdluli on the right. They extended their lead five minutes later when veteran Malawi international Essau Kanyenda charged in on a long through ball, exploiting a massive hole at the back to knock in another header.

With City wasting a couple more chances to stretch the advantage, Tuks had an opportunity to narrow the lead, but they were wayward with two attempts in quick succession.

In the dying stages of the opening period of the game, Galabgwe Moyana fired home a long-range effort that was well placed in the top left corner to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage at the break. Tuks made more of an impact in the second half but failed to close the gap as City held on for a vital three points.

"Things worked out well for us and we got the goals when we had the opportunities," said Polokwane coach Boebie Solomons. "Sometimes you play well and don’t score, but we got the ball in the net, which is what counts.

"We didn’t play that well in the second half. I think we sat back too much, but we kept the ball nicely in the last 20 minutes."

While Polokwane grabbed their third win of the league campaign, Tuks continued to struggle as they were handed their sixth defeat in 10 matches. "I’m very disappointed," said Tuks coach Steve Barker.

"We can’t concede goals like that in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the game. I f you give away goals like that you’re going to put yourself under pressure.

"It was a little bit better in the second half, but in all reality, the game was lost in the first half."

Meanwhile, a Thanduyise Khuboni penalty and a Bongi Ntuli strike helped Golden Arrows edge out Maritzburg United 2-1 in their Premiership derby at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, outside Durban, on Sunday.

Captain Khuboni put Arrows in front after 63 minutes, before the impressive Ntuli added a second, three minutes later. Substitute Ayanda Nkosi pulled one back after 71 minutes, but the hosts held on to climb 14th on the table.

Free State Stars escaped defeat in a 1-1 Premier League draw against AmaZulu at Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.
