Chiefs, though, are looking to give their coach a new two-year deal.
Baxter said Amakhosi were keen to keep him on board, but that he was not getting ahead of himself.
“We are just trying to find common ground, that’s what it is,” said Baxter. “The attitude of the club is that they want continuity.
“I’m enjoying working with the players. They want me to stay and I want to stay. If all things are equal and the plans to go forward are what we are talking about, then let’s put that in black and white.”
Chiefs cruised into the next round of the Telkom Knockout Cup on Saturday after an easy 3-0 win over Polokwane City.
The 60 year old may have had a shaky start to the season, but Chiefs are still among the top sides on the PSL standings – and the Brit will be looking to add another Cup to his successes at the Soweto club.
What’s impressive about Baxter is that he is actually interested in rebuilding the club’s development.
Some coaches are so results-driven that they forget that the future of a club really lies in the players coming through the ranks. If they are not nurtured, South African football will continue to suffer.
A firm believer in development, Baxter wants to leave a lasting legacy.
“My father used to say, whichever job or country you are in, the club has got to be in better shape when you leave than when you arrived,” he said.
