The weekend saw Lamontville Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi resign less than 24 hours after leading his side to a thrilling 3-2 victory over BidVest Wits in the Telkom Knockout.

Four defeats in the club’s opening six league games of the season had perhaps made up Mngqithi’s mind whatever the result on Friday night, and he did have the look of Dead Man Walking during the game.
Sundowns confident ahead of clash with Arrows
It is a shame for him, he is a great student of the game and someone I admire. There is no doubt that his coaching ability is good enough for the PSL, perhaps even above average, but his let-down is in getting the players to understand what he wants.
Just a few years ago, during his first spell with Abafana Bes’thende, he led to the side to their one and only major cup triumph, the 2009 MTN8 when they demolished Ajax Cape Town in the final.
At the time the club were playing some of the most attractive football in the land and many of those players would go on to bigger and brighter things.
He has also been let down by circumstance this time round, the loss of MTN as a sponsor is a big financial blow and looking at the names the club was able to attract in the last transfer window, with the greatest respect to them, this always looked like a season of toil.
He has been swiftly replaced by Englishman Mark Harrison, who leaves his post at Chippa United.
Harrison failed to keep the Chilli Boyz in the PSL last season, though they were already doomed when he took over with six games remaining in the regular season.
He lost just one of the last 10 matches in the campaign, including the post-season playoffs, and had made an unbeaten start to this one after four matches as well.
He does have previous PSL experience with Mpumalanga Black Aces as well, but that was another season that ended in relegation after he joined late on.
By all accounts he is a very good coach, he has his sides organised and playing together as a unit and perhaps Arrows could benefit from that structure.
Given his record you feel he deserves another shot at the PSL and the best of luck to him.
Clinton Larsen’s resignation from Bloemfontein Celtic was both surprising and not.
Last season he took the club to the Telkom Knockout title and fifth place in the league, an excellent effort given their resources.
Now, just two months into the new campaign and one of South Africa’s brightest young coaches is gone. So from that point of view it came as a bit of a shock.
But on the other hand, the club have won just one of their last 10 games if you include the tail-end of the previous season and in South African football, where owners sit with pistols loaded, that is always going to have a coach under pressure of the sack.
