Russia coach Dmitry Khomukha insists his side were on course for a sensational World Cup upset before their hopes were shattered by a red card for midfielder Dmitry Barinov.

But it was far from easy with all three goals coming in the final 20 minutes and, crucially, after Barinov was given a straight red for a robust challenge on Brazil full-back Auro.
Barinov won the ball before his momentum led to the collision and you could feel a degree of sympathy for the Lokomotiv Moscow youngster.
And Khomukha said: “Before the sending off we played equally with Brazil, but they pushed on afterwards and scored easily. “I cannot say for sure [if it was a red card], but we thought he touches the ball first. I haven’t had a proper look at it yet.”
However Brazil coach Alexandre Gallo felt it was a fair decision and that his side would have progressed regardless. “It was a red card and even if Russia doesn’t get the red card, we still would have won," he said. “We scored three goals, we could have scored more. It was a good win for us, we deserved it.”

Elsewhere, Italy coach Daniele Zorato conceded defending champions Mexico deserved to progress to the quarter-finals after they defeated his team 2-0 at the Mohammed bin Zayed stadium.
A fabulous 25-yard strike by forward Alejandro Diaz opened the scoring after 26 minutes, and the Mexicans made the game safe in injury-time when Ivan Ochoa tapped in a Christian Tovar cross.
Zorato said: “Mexico were definitely the better team in this game, even though it was still in the balance until the last couple of moments.
“They have much more experience at this level than us and it showed out there. This was a great tournament for us as we’re playing teams who are a lot more advanced than us.”
