| Sundowns vs Ajax |
While Ajax have been huffing and puffing with no success this season, Sundowns have not done that badly. Ajax, who were rocked by boardroom squabbles last season, are yet to win a match this season while Sundowns, who they host at the Cape Town Stadium this evening, have managed two victories and one draw so far this season.
The chips are likely to be down at Ajax. They have had to deal with unfavourable fixtures, which have not only seen them get little action but also led to them doing badly. Ajax have collected just one point from possible nine following two losses and a draw. They face a mountainous task to shrug off their poor form when they clash with a star studded Sundowns team that is second on the log with seven points after two wins and a draw.
Ajax have not been done favours by recent international breaks and postponement of fixtures. Ajax coach Muhsin Ertugral is happy that his side will be playing regularly now.
“Football is about playing games you need to play games at regular intervals to keep the players in peak form. I am a competitive person and the two games played in such a short time allow us an opportunity to work on our game and for the players to show their progress in a match situation. Having two games in on week is what I love and it’s good for the players,” said Ertugral.
Tonight Ajax will have to keep their former star Khama Billiat in check. The tricky winger, whom Ajax sold to Sundowns last month, could prove dangerous for his former employers. During the international break, Billiat was in his element delivering man of the match performance for Zimbabwe in a 2-1 win over Bafana Bafana. Billiat is one of close to 15 players that Mosimane has lured to Chloorkop this season.
In previous seasons Sundowns have always had big name players but they couldn’t end the silverware drought that has tormented the club for six years. Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says his side has quality to do well but they have to put in some effort in their work.
“We believe that we have the quality to win against any team in our league. Now we must work on the other aspects of our game, because if we do not do that, teams that might not have the same quality but rely on their work ethic and will to win may beat us,” said Mosimane.
New signings Bongani Zungu, Dove Wome, Bryce Moon, Kennedy Mweene and Cuthbert Malajila are some of the players that have impressed for Sundowns in recent matches.
Mosimane says the team is not yet where he wants it to be.
“So far, we are happy with the performances, but we are far from being a settled team. This will take time” said Mosimane. - Pretoria News
