It was Chiefs’ first League defeat of the season and brought Stars to within five points of the leaders in the title tussle, with Orlando Pirates in second position.
A calculating and composed Stars dominated the proceedings from the outset and were well worth the 2-0 lead they had secured as early as the 25th minute.
Henrico Botes and Mogakolodi Ngele scored the goals.
The game underwent a significant change in the second period, with Chiefs belatedly unshackling themselves from their early lethargy and probing continually to open their tally.
But with Stars defending doggedly to a man and inspired by the guiding influence of former Pirates midfielder Benson Mhlongo, Chiefs never truly gave any suggestion they could pull the match out of the fire.
In other results on Saturday, Maritzburg United edged 10-man Moroka Swallows 3-1, Free State Stars beat AmaZulu 1-0 and Black Leopards climbed into the top-half of the standings with a 2-1 win over AmaTuks.
