Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune yesterday boldly declared that the Naturena side was going for the Nedbank Cup and the Absa Premiership title this season.
Khune was speaking at the second-round draw of the Ke Yona cup held in Johannesburg yesterday, where the Amakhosi were drawn against last season’s finalists, Black Leopards.
This season, only Roses FC survived from the lowest ranks, while the National First Division is represented by United FC and Witbank Spurs.

Khune said his team was ready to reclaim the Nedbank Cup, which they have won 12 times, but have not come close to lifting since 2006. Even the prospect of travelling to Limpopo is not a daunting one for Khune, since everyone knows that the Amakhosi are at home wherever they play in South Africa.
“Peter Mokaba Stadium is like a home away from home for us. Although Leopards are a great team, I feel that this could be our year. We’re gearing for the double and won’t have any problem playing away,” Khune said.
Although Lidoda Duvha may not be regarded with the same reverence as their opponents, their recent success in the Confederation Cup must have gone a long way to earning them some respect.
Leopards marketing manager Tshifhiwa Thidiela believes that the team will continue their tradition of performing beyond expectation in this competition.
“We have done considerably well in the Nedbank Cup in the past, not just last season when we lost the final to Orlando Pirates,” Thidiela said.
“One year we reached the semis despite playing in the NFD, so it is normal for us. The cup is there for the taking and Leopards will be ready for Chiefs.”
Khune, who this weekend will make his debut as captain, was inundated with questions about the Soweto derby. “Everyone is giving me their full support. I am getting good guidance from the rest of the squad,” he said.
