Tshabalala and Khune 10 Trails in UK

THE future has taken an upward turn for Itumeleng Khune and Siphiwe Tshabalala after Kaizer Chiefs announced receiving invitations for 10-day trials for the duo with English Championship outfit Crystal Palace.

Big-spending Mamelodi Sundowns had been reported to be chasing after their signatures since they have not renewed their current contracts with Chiefs which run out in June.

Siphiwe Tshabalala
Amakhosi coach Vladimir Vermezovic has said that his target for the January transfer window is to retain his star players – including Tshabalala and Khune – in the quest to win the Absa Premiership for the first time since the 2004/05 season. With an overseas move on the line, that could be hard to achieve.

The club has, however, agreed to release them to try their luck, confirming this on their website. Tshabalala, the Bafana Bafana vice-captain, has always been frank about his ambition to play abroad, which saw him sidelined for the Chiefs captaincy, that ironically went to Khune.

He was also overlooked in the post for one of the four “advisors” to the skipper. Tshabalala will be looking to avoid the rejection he has experienced at another Championship outfit, Nottingham Forest, who promised nothing more than to continue monitoring his progress after a trial stint with them.

He will leave for England this month while Khune will only join the side next month due to an injury that has seen him out of action since October in Bafana Bafana’s goalless draw with Sierra Leone which ruled the side out of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Action on the pitch may have taken a break, but in boardrooms things are getting busier with teams looking to bolster their squads during the transfer window before the league resumes on February 15.

The final destination of Elias Pelembe has been another big talking point with Orlando Pirates looking to bolster their squad with his acquisition.

The Buccaneers want the Mozambican midfielder for their Caf Champions League quest that begins with a tie against Angolan outfit Recreativo do Libolo in the preliminary round.

His reported R500 000 salary request at Sundowns, where he has six months remaining on his contract, might be the stumbling block but Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza has said that winning the tournament for the second time is the club’s main priority.
