Shaba takes Chiefs to Nedbank Cup Quarter finals

The 2010 Nedbank Cup Champions will not defend their cup crown after they were empathically beaten 4-0 by Kaizer Chiefs in a Nedbank Cup last 16 match at the BidVest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

On the day the Soweto Giants were simply too good for the Students who were schooled by the crisp passing and clinical finishing of the Mighty Amakhosi.

In attack Chiefs were ruthless and in defence they were stubborn while Itumeleng Khune was never troubled in the Amakhosi goal.

The home side saw their goal threatened as early as the tenth minute when Sthembiso Ngcobo provided a good through ball for Siphiwe Tshablala to run onto, but his 14-yard shot was brilliantly saved by Darren Keet to keep the scores level.
But Wits’ joys was short lived as they fell behind only three minutes later when Mthokozisi Yende supplied the pass that saw Tshabalala through on goal and he made no mistake as he rounded the keeper and coolly passed the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.

Wits were further schooled in the 35th minute when Kaizer Chiefs doubled their lead. Tshabalala whipped in a corner-kick and as Wits failed to clear the danger Sthembiso Ngcobo pounced on the loose ball after a goal mouth scramble and fired it home from six-yards out, 2-0.

The second 45 minutes saw the Students start a little more promising and should really have pulled a goal back two minutes after the restart. Sibusiso Vilakazi found some space inside the box, but his 16-yard shot went centimetres wide of the target.

Thereafter Chiefs again took control f the match and started creating some chances of their own. It was only a matter of time before they found their third goal which came in the 74th minute.

Tshabalala put the result beyond doubt when he grabbed his brace. Jimmy Tau drove down the right flank and whipped in a good cross which found the midfielder unmarked and he made no mistake with a clinical finish from eight-yards, 3-0.

George Lebese provided the icing on the cake for the Phefeni Glamour Boys when he scored his side’s fourth goal with a great 22-yard free-kick that wrong footed Keet, 4-0.

For Wits their troubles were made even worse when Sifiso Myeni was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for some foul language and rude gestures towards the referee.

The win sees Chiefs into the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup for the first time and the champions exit the tournament.
