Two points separate Chiefs and Pirates prior to derby

They might have dropped two valuable points at home yesterday but Orlando Pirates still top the Premiership table and lead closest rivals Kaizer Chiefs by two points.


Amakhosi could have caught up with them at the top had they won at Santos, but they had to settle for a 2-all draw against the inconsistent Boebie Solomons' side.


With AmaZulu looking like they would bag all three points after Lehlohonolo Majoro had put them ahead with only four minutes left, Happy Jele scored in the referee's added time to give Pirates a crucial point.


Rudi Krol was wearing his "lucky charm", a pink shirt and "The Happy People" were in full cry but still their team could not win.

Pirates, who visit Amakhosi at Soccer City for the keenly anticipated Soweto Derby on Saturday, were without most of their stars and it showed as their display was not indicative of a team looking to win the championship.


Their defending was atrocious for the most part and had Usuthu attackers been sharper, they would have scored more.


Oupa Manyisa, who has improved lately and was deservedly given the man of the match award, saw his effort go inches wide.


Phenyo Mongala had possibly the Bucs' best chance in the eighth minute after finding himself unmarked inside the box, but was denied by Usuthu goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela.


Almost immediately AmaZulu had a good chance when Gavin Hammers found himself in a good position but his first touch was heavy and Pirates' goalie Senzo Meyiwa gathered.


With only four minutes before interval, Katlego Mashego shot over from a good position. After the interval, Pirates pushed men forward but when Mongala sent in a good cross in the 56th minute there was no one to connect with it.


l At Athlone Stadium, Santos drew first blood in the 22nd minute through Vuyisile Wana who easily beat goalie Itumeleng Khune after a pass from Salmaan King, writes Thami Nqolobe.


Chiefs equalised via a penalty by striker Knowledge Musona in the 35th minute to take his league goal tally to 11.


Chiefs were awarded the penalty by referee Buyile Gqubule after Santos defender Ricardo Scheepers brought down Jimmy Tau inside the box.


Santos regained their lead after a header by Jurie Basie in the 51st minute but substitute S'thembiso Ngcobo cancelled out Basie's strike two minutes later.
