THE process of building Soccer City Complex is under way, with the upgrade turning the 2010 Fifa World Cup opening and closing venue into a fully fledged sports centre.
Stadium Management South Africa executive chairperson Jacques Grobbelaar said workers have already started developing the first training ground in the complex. Grobbelaar said they will develop five training grounds but at this stage only one pitch has been approved. Each facility costs about R1,2million.

"Groundworks have progressed well for the first of a series of additional upgrades to the precinct, which will culminate in a world-class sporting hub in Soweto," he said.
"We want to bring junior soccer, school soccer and National First Division games here because we we want to make the precinct accessible to the community.
"With the World Cup behind us it is time to begin the next phase of development at Soccer City Complex and we are excited to further enhance the offering at the stadium which will attract additional sporting events from the global sporting arena as well as providing added amenities to resident teams."
Grobbelaar also announced that tickets for the eagerly awaited Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Soccer City on February 24 were now on sale.
They are available at Computicket outlets, Shoprite and Checkers stores throughout the country.
