The Johannesburg-born Somma, who also spent five years in Serie A in Italy, has been called up for the Mandela Challenge match at Cape Town Stadium.
Somma, who was recently offered a new three-year deal by the Elland Road club, told Sowetanhe has always wanted to play for his country of birth.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane said the 25-year-old forward will give him more options up front.
"Davide deserves the chance as he is scoring regularly for his club despite being used mainly as a substitute. He's got the body and we are confident he will do the job for us," Mosimane said.
Senior players Aaron Mokoena and Macbeth Sibaya have been rested, while Katlego Mphela and Bongani Khumalo are injured.
Mosimane, who promised South Africans a win over the Stars and Stripes, also recalled Matthew Pattison, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Daylon Claasen, Siyanda Xulu and Bevan Fransman.
Safa spokesperson Morio Sanyane said the encounter will start at 9.30pm because it will be shown globally by ESPN.
