Celtic, Chiefs meet in Macufe Cup | |||||||||
It is the second straight year that Celtic and Chiefs will contest the Macufe Cup – in 2009 the Amakhosi claimed a 3-1 win thanks to a hat-trick from Zimbabwean striker Knowledge Musona. And Musona has been the scourge of Phunya Sele Sele twice already this season, scoring winning goals in both the MTN8 quarterfinal and Absa Premiership matches that Celtic and Chiefs have contested – both encounters were won 1-0 by the Soweto team. However, Musona will not have the chance to further torment Celtic’s defenders in the Macufe Cup, as he will be on international duty with Zimbabwe. Three other Warriors players – Tinashe Nengomasha, Jimmy Jambo and Thomas Sweswe – will also be unavailable for Chiefs. The Amakhosi will also have to do without Bafana Bafana quartet Itumeleng Khune, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Sthembiso Ngcobo, as well as U-23 trio Mandla Masango, Lucky Baloyi, Lucky Khune, and Burundian defender Valery Nahayo. Celtic’s Bongani Ndulula will be away with the national U-23 team. The absence of these players should allow coaches Clinton Larsen (Celtic) and Vladimir Vermezovic (Chiefs) to give valuable game time to fringe players in their squad and to prepare for the resumption of the Absa Premiership next weekend. A curtain-raiser game between Premiers 11 and Absa 11 will kick-off at 13h00 at the Free State Stadium and there will be entertainment in the form of Shugasmakx and Silkour, Rhythmic Elements, Ba2cada, DJ Sfate and Ball Jugglers. Gates open at 10h00. Tickets are available at Computicket, Shoprite Checkers, Celtic Office, Kenworth Spar, OBC Chickens, Shell Garage Rocklands and PACOFS.
