Chiefs and Sundowns share spoils

Johannesburg – Log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to share the spoils with their hosts Kaizer Chiefs in their Absa Premiership match which ended goalless at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, on Saturday evening.

Amakhosi goalmouth custodian Reyaad Pieterse produced the stand-out performance in the match after denying the Sundowns attack twice single-handedly from point-blank range towards the end.

However, Lorenzo Joao Gordinho, the Chiefs defender was named Man of the Match.

So much was at stake for the sides after their excellent displays at the end of last year when Pitso Mosimane’s Sundowns finished top of the log, and Steve Komphela’s Amakhosi five points adrift. Sundowns with 26 points were level with Bidvest Wits but had a superior goal difference.

The Brazilians were on a four-match winning streak, whereas the Amakhosi were equally impressive with two wins and a draw before signing off their 2015 commitments.

Just five minutes into the match Chiefs suffered a disruption when George Lebese went down with an injury. He suffered a groin muscle tear which brought about a premature end to his participation in the match. He was replaced by the Ugandan Sula Matovu.
