Van Gaal given free player shopping spree

By noreply@blogger.com (Vox Rep) on Jul 21, 2014 01:07 pm

Louis van Gaal has been told to carry on spending in his bid to make Manchester United great again.

Despite the club having already spent almost £60million this summer on Southampton left back Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera of Athletic Bilbao, Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insists there is no limit on the funds available to the Dutchman, who is with his squad in Los Angeles.

‘There is no fixed budget,’ Woodward told MUTV. ‘Financially we are extremely strong, funds are available. Louis is assessing what’s been going on, we’ve been in dialogue for some time about targets, so there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Watch this space.’

Woodward also confirmed that there are likely to be departures as well as arrivals before the start of the season.

Asked if players would be leaving, Woodward said: ‘Yes, the manager makes that decision. A few have already gone, there may be a few others that go.

‘It’s also worth commenting we’re not in Europe this year, there are less games, maybe the manager takes the view he wants a tighter squad to bed in. Last year, Liverpool performed extremely well with a smaller number of players, but that’s a decision for the manager.’

Liverpool have no such limitations now, and Loic Remy is set to become their fifth signing of the summer when he joins the squad in Boston this week.

Liverpool’s £8.5million bid for the France forward was accepted by Queens Park Rangers over the weekend and Remy will complete the formalities of a medical when he links up with Brendan Rodgers’s squad.

There is increasing confidence Remy will be joined by Southampton’s Dejan Lovren, who has been Rodgers’s top central defensive target all summer.

Liverpool had a £20m bid rebuffed in early June. Yet he is keen on a Merseyside move, and Southampton look set to grant Lovren his wish and take the fees they have received from Liverpool in this window to £47.6m, having sold them Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert.

Southampton are in danger of losing another player with Morgan Schneiderlin, 24, keen to join his former manager Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, who he prefers to their rivals Arsenal, for around £16m.

Pochettino has signed left back Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm after a £15m deal was agreed with Swansea that will see Gylfi Sigurdsson go the other way. Sigurdsson, 24, was pulled out of Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Seattle Sounders after his move was agreed.

Lewis Holtby opened the scoring for Tottenham and penalties from substitutes Roberto Soldado and Iago Falque secured the draw in a game that marked the return of Andros Townsend after long-term injury. – Daily Mail

SA Football players money makers

They have enjoyed their two months of leave, holidaying around the world with their families and friends.

Now it’s back to the grind for South African footballers who are preparing for another gruelling season.

They will have no breaks, not much time to relax and will have minimum time with their families and friends until next May.

Instead, they will spend the majority of their time on the training ground, in the gym, and on the soccer pitch, working hard to ensure they have a great season ahead.

They will also have to follow a strict diet to ensure that they are in peak fitness for the entire season.

This means dedicating their time to their careers. But is it all worth it for footballers in South Africa?

The highest-paid players in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in South Africa make between R3.5 million and R5 million a year, according to a report compiled by football magazine KickOff last year.

The top six highest-paid PSL players include Sundowns player Teko Modise and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala who earn about R300 000 to R450 000 a month.

Other players earning similar figures a month include Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and Sundowns stars Elias Pelembe and Anthony Laffor.

The figures exclude the endorsements that the players earn.

It is only recently that PSL clubs have been paying such high salaries. A few years ago, it was unimaginable for a PSL player to be earning so much.

Last year, former Arsenal and West Ham star Luis Boa Morte joined defending champions Orlando Pirates. It was reported that Boa Morte would earn close to half a million a month.

Former Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy also returned to SA two years ago and signed for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and was reported to be earning R450 000 a month.

While their wages seem staggering, SA footballers earn peanuts compared to their overseas counterparts.

The world’s highest paid footballer, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo earns about R266 million a year from his club Real Madrid.

To break it down, the star midfielder earns about R22 million a month, R5 million a week, R735 000 a day, R39 000 an hour, and R626 a minute.

What the highest-paid players in SA earn in a year, the Portuguese star makes in less than ten days.

His monthly salary is three times the amount that the highest-paid footballers in SA earn in a year and his annual salary is 39 times more than what SA’s highest-paid footballers earn annually.

Also, the record transfer fee in PSL history for an internal transfer is R9 000 000, a figure that Ronaldo makes in a little under two weeks.

Other footballers who earn similar salaries to Ronaldo include Brazilian star Neymar, Argentinean forward Lionel Messi and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich.

SAFA tight lipped about coach replacement

By noreply@blogger.com (Vox Rep) on Jul 19, 2014 05:41 pm

Johannesburg – With a week to go until the new Bafana Bafana coach is officially unveiled in Johannesburg, South Africans are still no closer to knowing who the SA Football Association (Safa) will name on July 26.

Joint-favourite to get the nod, Carlos Queiroz, was widely expected to rule himself out of the race earlier this week, when Iranian media suggested that he was on the verge of signing a new contract with the Iranian Football Federation (IFF).

The IFF, however, has yet to make an announcement, after Thursday was earmarked as the day that Queiroz would pen the deal.

The former Manchester United assistant has been strongly linked with the vacant Bafana post, a position he held between 2000 and 2002.

His contract with Iran ended after the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. Iran finished last in group F.

Meanwhile, the other favourite, Stephen Keshi, has held talks with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), demanding a better deal and assurances that he would be granted a contract negotiated on his own terms.

The NFF – who were banned from any international activity by Fifa on July 9, following interference from the Nigerian government – are believed to be in talks with the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning boss.

The ban was subsequently lifted on Friday, after the Nigerian government withdrew from any dealings with the NFF, allowing the country's soccer authority to return to normal.

Had the ban been upheld, Keshi could have been prompted to find a new employer, with the threat of Nigeria not taking part in any matches, which would include qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, looming.

While much of the attention this week was focused on Queiroz and Keshi's every move, South African under-20 coach Shakes Mashaba publicly expressed his desire to be given the chance to lead the senior side.
“If the nation wants me to go there (to Bafana), I can't say no,” Mashaba said this week.

“For now I'm not going to say much on this matter. Let's wait for the announcement (next week).”

Safa are also keeping mum on the announcement of the technical director post, which will also be made public next weekend.

Former Bafana and current Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter remains the early favourite for the job, but the Briton has told the Amakhosi management that he is not interested in the post. – Sapa

Growth of football shirt sponsor ads

By noreply@blogger.com (Vox Rep) on Jul 18, 2014 04:56 pm

It’s no longer much of a surprise that soccer’s richest teams have leveraged their on-field performances into multi-billion dollar operations.

There may be no better example of how a team’s success gets monetized than the rich kit and shirt sponsorship deals teams have negotiated in recent years.

For the sport’s most valuable teams, those two partnerships – kit deals are with manufacturers like Adidas and Nike that make the jerseys, while shirt sponsors are companies that pay to have their logo put on them – can be worth well over $75 million per year.

Far and away the best example is Manchester United. Despite a falling value, down 11% to $2.81 billion this year, no other team compares when it comes to rich jersey deals.

The Red Devils originally set the bar on kit deals with a 2002 agreement with Nike, worth over $35 million per year as the English Premier League’s most valuable kit deal until just two years ago. That kit agreement will soon expire and be replaced with a new one that’s expected to be worth a massive $1 billion over ten years.

Tack on a jersey sponsorship from General Motors GM -1.01% that’s worth $559 million over seven years and you’ve got a team that’s set to collect an average $180 million annually just from its gameday shirts.
To put that into perspective, consider that only 16 soccer teams currently make that much in total annual revenue.

Complete Coverage: The Business of Soccer

That’s what happens when a team succeeds on the field like Manchester United has in recent seasons. Since signing its 2002 kit deal with Nike, Manchester United has won six Premier League titles and has cracked the league’s top three teams in every season except the current one. In that time the Red Devils also picked up a Champions League title in 2007-08, plus other wins in the FIFA Club World Cup and FA Cup.

And while no team comes close to Manchester United in jersey sponsorship income, many have been trying to close the gap. More importantly, they have been following the same blueprint of turning on-field success and subsequent fan fervor into massive sponsorship deals.

Pirates show off new kit

Cape Town – Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, unveiled their new home and away kit for the upcoming 2014/15 season.

With the upcoming launch the social media was indifferent with a leaked jersey that was green but now the fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the strip is in the original black with the away kit an all red.

75th anniversary edition which was in 2011, was the last time the Buccaneers had a jumper with a white collar. It returns this year with the original Adidas stripes across the shoulder and upper arm.

“We are very excited for this season’s Orlando Pirates kit,” said Adidas PR Manager, Gugu Ntuli.

“Our strong relationship with this legendary Club has allowed for our designers to create something special for our players and their fans.”

Pirates’ first outing in their new jersey is none more fitting than an encounter against their biggest arch rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, at the FNB on July 26 for the Carling Black Label Cup.

Chiefs not too keen on Africa conquest

By noreply@blogger.com (Vox Rep) on Jul 17, 2014 11:52 am

KAIZER Chiefs will decide only next week whether they will participate in next
year’s African Champions League, in a lukewarm reaction to confirmation that
South Africa now has two places in the prestigious club competition.

Click here for free insurance quotes ,car, home or biz.

"At the moment we are still discussing it and we will wait until the coach
gets back from the training camp in Port Elizabeth next week before we make
any decision," the club’s football manager, Bobby Motaung, said on Tuesday.
"We have to figure out what is the best option for the club, both in terms of
finance and our players’ welfare."

Motaung said Chiefs had found competing in this year’s Champions League,
where they were knocked out in the third round, as well as going onto one more
round in the African Confederation Cup in Côte d’Ivoire, to be financially
draining.

He said it was also important to manage the club’s relatively small squad as
efficiently as possible.

"We have the Cosafa tournament and possibly the Nations Cup coming up during
this season, which will see Chiefs players competing.

"Then we have the important second half of the season, which is at the same
time as the opening rounds of the Champions League, and the big questions is
— do we have the depth in our squad to have our players competing on too
many fronts?

"These are all the things we are looking at before we decide whether we will
enter," he said.

Chiefs’ uncertain attitude contrasts with the gung-ho approach of champions
Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their coach, Pitso Mosimane, is desperate for continental success next year
and has been strengthening his squad to perform at both continental and
domestic level.

South Africa have won an extra place in both the Champions League and the
Confederation Cup after picking up points on the Confederation of African
Football rankings index following Orlando Pirates’ thrilling run to last
year’s Champions League final against Al Ahli of Egypt.

This was confirmed by the Premier Soccer League last week, with Chiefs now
able to join Sundowns in the 2015 Champions League field and Bidvest Wits
qualifying along with cup winners Orlando Pirates for a spot in the
Confederation Cup.

It would be the first time such a powerful field of clubs was fielded by South
Africa in a single year of African club competition.

Chiefs had high hopes this year of emulating their great rivals Pirates but
were bundled out by AS Vita Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo before
the group phase. The African run had an effect on their championship hopes,
which faded towards the end of the season, and on their campaign to retain
their Nedbank Cup title, which slipped away on penalties to Wits in the
semifinals.

In 2004, CAF introduced an extra place in both of their annual competitions
for the top 12 countries in Africa — based on performances over the previous
five years of completion with points given for reaching the various stages.

South Africa was among the initial 12 and had two teams in the Champions
League field from 2004 (Pirates and SuperSport United were the first double
act) until 2010, except for 2007, when Pirates did not enter.

But in 2011, after a series of poor results, South Africa dropped alarmingly
down the rankings and the country was stripped of its extra berth.

Scolari dismissed as Brazilian coach

By noreply@blogger.com (Vox Rep) on Jul 15, 2014 11:10 am

Brazil's football confederation will not renew the contract of national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, local media reported on Monday, after the five-time World Cup winners were mauled by Germany in a humiliating 7-1 defeat on home soil.

Free insurance quote, car home biz, click here

News of Scolari's fate broke just after midnight Sunday, hours after Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro to win the 2014 World Cup.

Brazilians had long been hoping that they would be playing in the final and would likely win the tournament. On Saturday, speaking after Brazil lost the tournament's third place game 3-0 to the Netherlands, Scolari said that he would let the Football Confederation, or CBF, decide his future.

The Netherlands defeat came after Germany crushed Scolari's Selecao 7-1 on Tuesday at the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte. That defeat was Brazil's most devastating performance since losing the 1950 final Cup game to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, a black mark on the nation's psyche known as the "Maracanazo."

The Football Confederation, or CBF, also fired the whole technical committee, including technical coordinator Carlos Alberto Parreira, local media reported. Parreira had managed Brazil to a World Cup victory in 1994.

Scolari, 65, best known by his nickname Felipao, led Brazil to a World Cup victory in 2002 in Japan. He took over the team in December 2012, replacing the sacked Mano Menezes, just before Brazil hosted the Confederations Cup. Brazil won that tournament, seen as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, 3-0 in a final match over reigning champions Spain.

Brazil then began preparing for what they hoped would be a sixth World Cup trophy. Critics however remained unconvinced by Scolari's decision to ditch Brazil's "jogo bonito" of skilful play and focus on strength and rough tactics, arguing that results mattered more than an artful game.

Brazil emerged from the first round of the World Cup tournament as top of its group, but had to resort to penalties to defeat Chile in the following round. Once in the quarter finals Brazil defeated Colombia 2-1, but in the rough game they lost their key player Neymar due to a foul that fractured the star's vertebra. When the Neymar-less team faced Germany it was clear within the first 30 minutes that they would not play in the final.

Brazilians will not easily forget the July 8 disaster, now known as the "Mineirazo," an event that shocked its supporters around the world. Scolari accepted full responsibility for the humiliating thrashing. "Who is responsible for chosing players? It's me. The responsibility for the catastrophic results are mine," he told reporters after the Germany game. The following day Brazil captain Thiago Silva defended Scolari.

"The defeat was not Felipao's fault. We are a group, and although I was not on the field I am part of that group," said Silva, who missed the record 7-1 defeat due to suspension. However Romario, a world champion in 1994 and now a Socialist lawmaker, says the problem is political and that the Football Confederation must shoulder the blame.

One day after the semi-final thrashing, Romario said the CBF was plagued by corruption because clubs have elected the same leaders for years. "Our football has been deteriorating for years. It is being dragged down by leaders who don't even have the talent to juggle the ball," Romario said in a letter posted on social media.

"They stay in their luxury box seats, enjoying the millions that go into their accounts," the 1994 World Cup winner said. He said the CBF's octogenarian president Jose Maria Marin and his deputy, 73 year-old Marco Polo del Nero, who will take over in 2015, "should be in prison".
