ISAAC "Shakes" Kungwane - an entertainer on the pitch and recently off it as a footballer-turned TV pundit - died on Wednesday following complications with diabetes.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana midfielder maestro had been admitted to hospital a few days earlier.
Kungwane died aged 43, leaving behind his wife and three children.
Kungwane fell ill a short while ago and was unable to attend this season's final episode of Robert Marawa's Extra-Time on Supersport. He was an analyst alongside Farouk Khan and former referee and Premier Soccer League general manager Ace Ncobo.
"We had become so close and formed such a lovely chemistry on screen. I had just tried to phone him the other day," said Khan, who said he was devastated after receiving news of the former Manning Rangers player's death.
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana teammate Doctor Khumalo was equally devastated when he heard the news yesterday. "It's a sad day for the football fraternity. It's a tragedy. His contribution to the local game was invaluable and we will miss him dearly."
Boxer Dingaan Thobela said: "I know Shakes too well, I'm speechless. This is a very sad loss for football because this guy retired but never turned his back on the sport, which gave him fame. Talented footballers like Shakes come once in 100 years."
