As defending champions, Amakhosi have already tasted defeat and, having lost a total of five points in their last two matches, Stuart Baxter has found out just how hard defending the league will be.
With the PSL resuming this weekend, Chiefs will host Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium and defender Morgan Gould is anticipating a crunch encounter.
“They (United) are a hard side to beat because they are playing with some German influence. They are very organised, hard to pin down and it will take something special on the day to beat them,” Gould said.
The Team of Choice is under the tutelage of former Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp and Gould believes that is what will make beating United a huge challenge.
“We have been working on our game during the break and things are coming together. I don’t think anything has changed in terms of our tactics because we want to assert ourselves in every match we play. After winning the league, expectations are high and we have to be consistent,” he said.
The Glamour Boys have not tasted victory in their last two matches, with the most recent one being a 3-1 defeat at the hands of SuperSport United, while Middendorp’s side managed a dull goalless draw against the University of Pretoria.
In their first three matches, Chiefs have scored a total of three goals and with top international strikers on their books like Knowledge Musona, Bernard Parker and Lehlohonolo Majoro, such a statistic is disappointing.
Whether Chiefs can score against Maritzburg is another question as the KwaZulu-Natal side will, in all likelihood, adopt a defensive approach to get a point and that does not sit well with Gould.
“It will be tough this weekend because United’s game plan is a draw and that makes it obvious that they will be very defensive. I am confident that we will manage to get some goals and get another win in the league,” Gould said.
