Pirates Beats Al Ahly 3-0 in caf championship match

Senzo Meyiwa
ORLANDO Pirates have secured one of the great victories in the club's 76-year history as they thumped Egyptian giants Al Ahly 3-0 in their CAF Champions League Group A in El Gouna on Sunday evening.

Ahly have been a dominant force on the continent in recent years, but were undone by some thrilling football by Pirates and a first half red card for the Red Devil's Ahmed Abdul Zaher.

Pirates' goals were scored by Thandani Ntshumayelo, Andile Jali and Sifiso Myeni, while the excellent Senzo Meyiwa also saved a penalty with the score 1-0 in The Buccaneers favour.

The match was played behind closed doors, which had nothing to do with the tense political situation in Egypt, but rather a ban placed on Ahly by CAF over spectator misbehaviour earlier in the competition.

It was certainly a positive for Pirates, who were spared what is usually an intimidating atmosphere led by Ahly's Ultras.

The home side had the better of the early exchanges, Shehab Ahmed dragging a shot wide from the edge of the box.

But Pirates' quick passing game was impressive and they took the lead with a lovely move.

Pirates move to the top of the pool and can look forward with confidence to their next fixture at home to Ahly's Cairo rivals Zamalek on August 17.

The Soweto giants are now in an excellent position to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time since 2006, as they seek to emulate their 1995 title triumph in this competition.
