Coach Joseph Mkhonza |
The football spectacle featured regional football teams ranging from under 13 - 19.
The tournament, now in it second year, is a joint initiative of the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Club Development cluster and SAFA Gauteng and aims to boost women's football in the province.
The tournament also provided the Women's national team coaches an opportunity to witness raw talent at junior level, something that made Banyana Banyana head, Joseph Mkhonza happy.
Mkhonza said he was very impressed with the talent on display.
Mkhonza said other provinces should take a leaf off the Gauteng lead and vigorously develop women's football within various structures.
"I was very impressed with the talent I saw at the tournament and I think we need to see more tournaments of this nature in all provinces across the country. I witnessed raw talent and that gives me great encouragement that this country is awash with good players. It really augurs well for the future.
"I think what we as coaches should do, is reach out to the coaches in a forum where we can address issues of coaching and training as a way of taking football to the next stage," added Mkhonza.
"It is also encouraging to see more female coaches on the side-lines as well as female referees. Our message to all of them is to be consistent and to continue working hard," said Mkhonza.
There was excitement galore at the two-day women's football tournament hosted jointly by SAFA Ekurhuleni and the Gauteng's Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation that took place at Delville Stadium in Germiston, Ekurhuleni over the weekend (24-25 August 2013).
