Nedbank Cup Black Aces beat AmaZulu 3-2

Mpumalanga Black Aces upset the applecart when they beat AmaZulu 3-2 in the last eight of the Nedbank Cup at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon to book themselves a place in the semifinals of the lucrative cup competition.
Aces’ goals came from Warren Bishop, Marawaan Bantam, and Mangoba Ngwenya, while Amazulu got their consolations goals from Goodman Dlamini and an own goal by Thabang Rooi.
Both teams had done well in the Nedbank Cup in previous years. In 2008 Aces reached the final where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns while AmaZulu played in 2010 final where they lost 3-0 against Bidvest Wits, and this game served as a test character for both teams as they had avoided Premiership teams in their last 32 and last 16 fixtures.

With Aces officially relegated to the first division the Mpumalanga outfit came into this game with a clear intention of doing well until the final stages and at least salvage some pride, and indeed It was a courageous display by the Mark Harrison coached side.
While Usuthu were focusing on players such as Mpho Meleka, a former player turned out to be the man who caused irreparable damage to their cause.
Warren Bishop broke the deadlock when he struck with a header after connecting with Joseph Makhanya’s corner kick in the eighth minute.
Before Aces’ goal, AmaZulu came close to breaking the ice in the first and fifth minutes respectively but first Bongani Mbele’s shot went over the bar, before Dennis Onyango denied Tangeni Shipau.
However the home side’s efforts were rewarded in the 17th minute when Goodman Dlamini profited from a cross from Siphahu to level matters for his team.
The goals seemed to galvanise both teams as they piled pressure on each other in search of the second but their rearguards stood firm.
In reality both sides were evenly matched in the first half, displaying soccer wizardry – much to the delight of the ardent fans.
Against the run of play, Aces increased their tally to two in the shape of Bantam after he was set up by Joseph Makhanya in the 37th minute.
AmaZulu also had a chance in the 34th minute but Mbele’s shot hit the cross bar with Onyango at his mercy.
The half time score was 2-1 to the visiting team.
The action continued in the second half as both sides launched the strong attacks and the home side were awarded a penalty after Bishop was adjudged to have fouled Ayanda Dlamini in the 53rd minute, but Aces’ keeper, Onyango did well to save from the resultant spot kick taken by Ayanda Dlamini.
Aces continued to pile pressure and took the game to AmaZulu searching for the third and it was Ngwenya who finally put the final nail into Usuthu’s coffin with a fine header in the 67th minute.
Ngwenya had a chance to score his second and fourth for Aces in the 80th minute, but after outrunning the entire AmaZulu defence, the latter dribbled past Mbongeni Mzimela in Aces’ goal, but his shot his the upright.
At this stage of the game, there seemed no chance for the Durban team to come back into the game, but the Mangoba Mngithi’s coached side pulled one back after Mbele’s shot was deflected into the net by Aces’ defender Rooi in the 82nd minute.
