Chiefs vs Pirates PSL title battle

A lot will be at stake this coming weekend when the Soweto Giants go head to head in an Absa Premiership clash that will surely decide who the real bosses of the game are. Of course Orlando Pirate fans argue that the bosses are exactly where they are meant to be at the moment, on the number one spot.

But Amakhosi supporters will wrestle against the facts at any cost if it means not taking their hats off and showing some respect to the Sea Robbers.

The last time these traditional giants met, Chiefs were clinical in dismantling the psyche of the Buccaneers, not without some help from the very unwilling rivals.

Pirates fans would hope that this time their skipper Lucky Lekgwathi will be more focused and luckier than the last time these two met. You will remember that the first two goals in that last match back in December were helped along by the captain. Daine Klate had the misfortune of scoring his first own goal that Chiefs’ first goal in that counter. He will surely be looking forward to righting the wrongs of that game.

Ezenwa Otorugu, who came in as a subtitute gave Pirates their only goal that day and the final score read 3-1. Will the Nigerian striker finish what he started then? When he indicated unequivocally that had he had more time, the result would have been different. I can only wonder.

The Pirates defence has been its undoing against the Glamour Boys In the past but judging by their latest performances in that area, Chiefs will struggle to find any mistakes to capitalise on.
Chiefs vs Pirates

Usually I would say, bragging rights are once again at stake and not only the 3 points that stand to be gained by either one of these teams but this time it’s bragging rights aside, the points are vital. Afterall the points will decide which team ends up above the other one on the log. And we all know that that is the latest claim to bragging rights.

Amakhosi plan on clinching their third successive victory over Orlando Pirates after two undoubted wins, no matter how technical the view. Pirates were beaten 3-1 in a premiership clash in November and then 3-0 in a Telkom Knockout match in December. Add to Chiefs’ psychological advantage Pirates’ suspensions and injuries woes and you will consider the Buccaneers truly outstanding if they win this one.

Both teams have played 21 games and have nine remaining in the season, Pirates sit at the top of the log with a 2 point lead. Ajax Cape Town sits on par with Chiefs, the latter only getting ahead thanks to goal difference.

Mamelodi Sundowns sits 5 points behind Ajax having choked at the weekend and succumbing 2-1 to Free State Stars at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Bafana Bastyle seem to be moving further and further away from title contention, even their coach Ian Gorowa didn’t appear too optimistic when asked if he considered Sundowns out of the running for the league title.

As far as the derby is concerned, I cannot wait for the thriller and may the best team win. I often complained about the lack of goals in the past but that was quickly turned around and I must say I am truly proud of the premier soccer league and its players.
