Banyana step closer to London Olympics 2012

Banyana Banyana kept their 2012 London Olympic dreams alive with a resounding 3-0 win over Zambia in front of a large crowd at the King Zwelthini Stadium in Umlazi near Durban on Saturday.

The South Africans held a 1-0 advantage at half-time after a well-timed run and classy finish from Jermaine Seoposenwe in the 28th minute. She beat the Zambian off-side trap to strike the ball home across the goalmouth, wide of Zambian goalkeeper Mirriam Katamana.

Being 3-1 down on aggregate after Banyana's 2-1 win over the Zambians in Lusaka two weeks earlier, the visitors' coach Enala Phiri was forced to bring on another striker in Gift Lisaka for Lillian Shonga.

The coach was also had to make a crucial change 11 minutes before the break, when Katamana, who had played superbly, limped off to be replaced by reserve goalie Ennie Matukuta.

The pace of Seopesenwe, who plays her football for Santos FC in the Western Cape, worried the Zambians and, together with anchor midfielder Nompumelelo Nsibande, proved more than a handful for the visitors on the left-hand-side of the park.

On the right-hand side Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini, who hails from Durban but studies and plays for the University of Johannesburg FC in the Gauteng Sasol League, created opportunities for striker Noko Matlou, and the home team could easily have been more than a goal to the good at the halfway stage.

Seopesenwe showed her speed on the right flank 10 minutes into the second half and produced a quality cross for Matlau to head home to double the score-line.

Two minutes later, the home side went 3-0 up as Dlamini scored from a cross from the right.

Dlamini and central defender Janine van Wyk, will be flying to the UK for trials with Bristol City next week.
