Ajax Cape Town still in the run for PSL top position

Ajax Cape Town scored their second derby win over Vasco da Gama this season, with a 2-1 victory at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.

There was little to choose between the two sides during a high energy opening 15 minuets, which saw the two neighbours battling for supremacy.

Vasco then started to take the initiative, with Sibusiso Zuma and Johnny Armogam both shooting wide from distance.

But it was the Urban Warriors who drew first blood when Thulani Serero netted from close range after Jason Barnard had failed to hold onto Derek Decamps’ cross from the left.

It could, and should have been 1-1 two minutes later, but Lebo Mothibantwa shot horribly wide after being nicely teed up by Zuma.

Ajax vs Vasco da Gama
The remainder of the half was fairly evenly balanced, though Khama Billiat could have added a second for Ajax after 35 minutes had he not hit a low shot wide across goal.

Vasco levelled the game in the 53rd minute when François Adams steered the ball across goal, where it stuck Zeka Karkee and bounced into the net.

As the game progressed, it was the Urban Warriors who had the better for the chances.

Around 70 minutes they had two opportunities in quick succession, but both Brent Carelse and then Sameehg Doutie were unable to beat Barnard with shots from 25-yards out and beyond.

Ajax though could have been down to 10 men if Decamps had seen red rather than yellow for a deliberate handball when Zuma looked set to head in on goal.

The winning goal came via a scintillating Serero run, the youngster showing why he’s so highly rated with a 78th minute solo effort that took him past a string of Vasco defenders.

The Urban Warriors could have made it three if Billiat had not fired against the bar with a 93rd minute effort.
