Banyana to face easy opponent for Olympic qualifier

A successful start to the South African women's soccer team's Olympic qualifying campaign is vital if they are to compete at the 2012 Games, Banyana Banyana acting coach Joseph Mkhonza said on Wednesday.

Banyana face Zambia in Lusaka on Saturday in the first leg of their qualifying opener.

“It's important for Banyana to get a win in our opening Olympic qualifier in Lusaka, because we will play the Zambians in the return fixture in Durban at the end of the month,” said Mkhonza.

He is standing in for coach Augustine Makalakalane, who was suspended late last year, reportedly pending a probe into allegations of sexual harassment and homophobia.

Following their bronze medal-winning performance at the CAF African Women's Championship in Daveyton last year, and a 3-0 win over Zimbabwe in Harare just before the Christmas break, Banyana have been training together in preparation for the trip to Zambia.
