Lead SA taking South Africa to new heights

LeadSA: Standing up for South Africa

Fresh from the successful hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™, South Africans are being urged not to shelve their flag-waving, vuvuzela-blasting, world-welcoming energy, but to channel it into changing the country for the better.

Launched on August 2010, the LeadSA initiative – www.leadsa.co.za– challenges ordinary South Africans to do the right thing on a daily basis and to counter the negative perceptions about the country.

Driven by Primedia Broadcasting and Independent Newspapers, LeadSA encourages the public to celebrate the achievements of the country while taking responsibility for its problems and challenges.

Using print, radio and the internet, LeadSA will spread the word about the successes of the country and its people, from leaders such Nelson Mandela to ordinary South Africans.

At the same time, the initiative will take up issues and challenge behaviours that undermine the country, including holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions.

LeadSA will also be guided by the many South Africans it hopes to get involved in the initiative.

Five focus areas

The initiative has identified five main focus areas: personal challenge, leadership, education, the Square Kilometre Array bid, and sport.

In the area of personal challenge, LeadSA will encourage South Africans to keep their moral compass pointed in the right direction, by respecting the laws of the country and caring for their communities.

In the leadership area, LeadSA will salute the unsung heroes of the country, share leadership skills and help develop new talent.

In education, the initiative aims to help improve the country's matric pass rate and celebrate the success of deserving teachers and pupils.

LeadSA will also focus on South Africa's bid to host the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the most powerful radio telescope yet, educating South Africans about the project and mobilising them behind it.

On the sports front, LeadSA aims to encourage the country to get behind Bafana Bafana once more, to ensure they qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and mobilise support to bring the 2020 Olympics Games to SA.

Ways of taking the lead

LeadSA offers a number of ways in which ordinary South Africans can become part of the initiative:

  1. Stand up for what's right. If you've had a glass too many, let a designated driver take you home.
  2. Stand up to corruption. Don't bribe.
  3. Stand up for morality. Report crime.
  4. Stand up for your community. Get to know your neighbours.
  5. Stand up against indifference. Take an interest in those around you.
  6. Stand up for free speech. Listen to the other side.
  7. Stand up for your future. Respect the environment.
  8. Stand up for education. Read to your children.
  9. Help instead of Hinder. Say yes when asked to do a favour, don't look for excuses.
  10. Acknowledge goodness. When you have something good to say, say it.
