South Africa vs Swaziland friendly Match Preview

BAFANA Bafana will face Swaziland for just the fourth time in their history when the national teams clash in a friendly international at the Somhlolo National Stadium, Lobamba, on Friday night.

While matches against regional opposition have been fairly commonplace over the years, Swaziland have been rare opponents with all three previous meetings coming in the Cosafa Cup.

That makes this weekend’s clash not only the first ever friendly international between the teams, but also the first time they are facing off in Swaziland. It took eight years after readmission to international football for South Africa to tackle Swaziland, the teams finally being forced together in the 2000 Cosafa Cup quarterfinals.

The then Germany-based Delron Buckley scored a brace to help Bafana to a 2-0 win. The game was staged in Witbank and drew a crowd of about 14,000.

The victorious Bafana squad was coached by Trott Moloto and captained by the now retired midfielder Thabo Mngomeni.

Two years later and the teams met again in the semifinals of the Cosafa Cup. Bafana won this encounter 4-1.

Teboho Mokoena netted a brace, Jabu Pule added a penalty and Stanton Fredericks scored the fourth goal for the home side in a game played at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This time the victory was delivered by a home-based line-up selected by then coach Shakes Mashaba that included the late Lesley Manyathela.

The last meeting between the teams was another Cosafa Cup clash. The game was played in 2006 at a neutral venue in Botswana.

It was a much tighter affair, with Benson Mhlongo scoring the only goal of the game.

Swazi players Wonder Nhleko and Tony Tsabedze, who are in line to play on Friday night, both played in that game seven years ago. Siphiwe Tshabalala is the only survivor in the Bafana squad.
