Bafana squad face Tanzania for ACN prep

The 22-man Bafana squad, consisting of PSL players plus Greece-based striker Bernard Parker, will arrive in Rustenburg today where they will be based until Thursday. Parker is home because the season is over Greece.

Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane is using Saturday's game to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations game against Egypt and improve their Fifa rankings.

Mosimane did not include players from Mpumalanga Black Aces and Orlando Pirates who meet in a Nedbank Cup semifinal at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Ajax Cape Town, who are eyeing their first league title, held on to their key players George Maluleke, Thulani "Simply The Best" Serero and Thulani Hlatshwayo.

"We are giving an opportunity to locally-based players and I think that we have enough depth in the country," said Mosimane at the announcement of the squad in Johannesburg yesterday. "The way the PSL is going at the moment it shows that it has improved and the vibe is great.

"It is important to maintain the winning momentum and improve our rankings.

"The positive is that we have the core of the team going to Tanzania and it will be important for us to win to build our confidence for the must-win match against Egypt (in Cairo on June 5)."

The new players in the squad include Tefu Mashamaite and Thabo Matlaba. Matlaba could not be reached yesterday but Mashamaite is ecstatic about the call-up.

"There are several overseas clubs who wanted to sign me but I could not go because I never played for Bafana Bafana," said the Bidvest Wits defender.
