Teko move to Sundowns not finalised

Twice Premier Soccer League footballer of the year, Teko Modise yesterday joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Orlando Pirates in a transfer believed to be worth about R5-million. But Sundowns and Modise have yet to agree on the player's salary package. They have until Monday, when the transfer window closes, to do so.

Modise has asked for a two-year deal with an option to renew it for two more seasons.

The dramatic move came after Pirates allowed Modise to move to their fellow title contenders with 14 matches still to go before the end of the season.

The Brazilians were pushed to buy Modise out of his contract with Pirates, which expires in June next year.

Sundowns decided to go for Modise when a similar offer to champions Supersport United for Anthony Laffor was rejected.

If Sundowns and Modise agree on terms, he's not likely to be the highest-paid player at the club, a position believed to still be held by Katlego Mphela.

Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza revealed yesterday that the Sundowns offer was attractive.

"It was a very good offer and we accepted it and wish the player well with his new club," Khoza said.

Talks of Modise joining Sundowns intensified when the player was suspended by Pirates last week after he had missed a camping session ahead of a crucial league match against Santos at Orlando stadium 14 days ago.

At the time, Modise claimed burglars had broken into his house in Roodepoort and that his wife had been treated for shock.

Modise's relationship with Pirates coach Ruud Krol was said to have reached breaking point.

Yesterday, Khoza said Pirates decided to drop all disciplinary charges against Modise, even though the club had the right to take action against him. The chairman said Pirates would gain nothing from punishing Modise.

"I have the report in my hand and it is complete," said Khoza, holding a brown-coloured file with the title: Teko Modise investigation.

"Suspending the player or slapping him with a R50000 fine would not serve any purpose," he said.

Meanwhile, Sundowns striker Mphela has reportedly demanded a meeting with club president Patrice Motsepe. Mphela yesterday missed his fourth successive training session and is in danger of facing a disciplinary hearing.

The player's absence from training is seen as a way of protesting against the club's refusal to grant him an overseas move before the end of the transfer window.
